Draw and pastel along with Sue - Little Owl's Haven. Tuesday evenings in February 6.50pm (GMT) which is 1.50pm (EST)
LIVE on Zoom and fully recorded, access for 30 days.
Ask questions and get feedback during the class.
During the class I will talk extensively about colour choices and techniques and the exact colours I'm using as I'm using them. You do not need the same exact colours as me, only similar colours which are outlined below.
You favourite pastel paper 8.5 x 8.5 inches. I'll be using brown pastelmat.
I will be drawing the owl and tree on the pastel paper with a cool grey (off white pastel pencil Faber Castell 230)
If you are drawing on ordinary paper you can use a normal HB pencil.
If you are drawing on normal paper first either freehand or with the grid (not pastel paper) you will want to have some tracedown transfer paper or graphite transfer paper to transfer it to the pastel paper afterwards. I will explain all this in the class.
You can use either pastel pencils, pastel sticks or pan pastel. Use whichever you have available. I will show you how to use them.
3 or 4 different green values + white preferably pastel stick or pan pastel.
3 or 4 different brown values + cream and a red/brown in stick or pan form and pencil form, try and match the colours.
Additional pastel pencils: cream/ivory, white, black, yellow, orange, red/brown and ochre if you have it (not essential).
Blending tools such as sofft tools, a tortillon and a small rubber blender.
A putty rubber.
If you are not sure you can watch and learn as we go along.
I'll break this down into 4 parts which will be recorded:
4th Feb: Drawing the owl and tree outlines
In this first class I'll teach you about composition and how to draw this scene freehand. I'll also show you how to use a grid and how to trace. Remember that there is no right or wrong choice here, only what you wish to do.
11th Feb: The background
How to achieve the background tree and greenery with pastels pencils, sticks and pans including choosing the colours and tricks to tweak your colours.
18th Feb: Pastelling Our Little Owl
Choosing colours and how to pastel.
25th Feb: Pastelling the foreground tree
How to get detailed bark effects including colour tricks to tweak the colours.
Sue is a wonderful tutor, so clear with her instruction and demonstrations and generous with tips and hints. I also love the fact I can stop and start the tutorial and go at my own pace. I've had such a brilliant response to the pictures completed from sue's tutorials both from family and my art group.
Sue introduced me to soft pastels and art! She gave me me the confidence to ‘have a go’ despite doubting myself and I’ve not looked back since!
I now have a dedicated room to producing art. I just wish I had more time but my life is much richer, colourful since that day I met up with Sue. Such a joy to be part of her journey…… and the Hub is amazing!"
